![]() ![]() The colossal pool is an attraction in its own right, holding the title of largest largest hotel pool in the continental U.S. And there’s no lack of amenities over the 150-acre property, with a lavish spa and salon, multiple tennis courts, the recently restored 18-hole Donald Ross Championship Golf Course (home of the Jim Mclean Golf Academy), and a choice of four restaurants. But despite the throwback charm, this grand dame has maintained its vast offerings and kept up with a modern crowd, having undergone a $35 million renovation in 2018 that updated all the rooms and common areas. The lobby still retains the trappings of that bygone era with hand painted frescoes on barrel vaulted ceilings, travertine floors, marble columns and carved mahogany furnishings. ![]() It doesn’t get any more old school Miami than this-a regal Mediterranean revival hotel that dates back to 1926 and has hosted presidents, dignitaries and even Oprah over the years. "Spectacular" was the word the Miami Herald ran in a headline for the Surf Club in November 1959. Try the Kumamotos, flown in daily from Washington state and dressed in a zingy citronelle emulsion. Densely planted with exotic palms, the latter evokes a cultivated jungle, a setting that is almost as memorable as Antonio Mermolia’s deft cooking, where the attention to detail extends to dyeing the ice over which they serve oysters the bluish-green of an iceberg. Of course, the restaurants are as much of an attraction: The Surf Club by superchef Thomas Keller opened its doors in summer 2018, and Le Sirenuse Miami comes from the owners of its namesake hotel in Positano. The cabanas now house part of the charming spa, where even the brushed-brass key pads on the lockers are a thing of beauty, as well as a handful of Cabana Studio bedrooms, each a pale-but-interesting essay in contrasting textures: canvas, rattan, and travertine. Set in Surfside at the less-developed northern end of Miami Beach, this hacienda-style hotel has been brilliantly extended by Richard Meier, whose 12-story glass towers seem to float above the terra cotta tiles of the original 1930s Mediterranean-style pantile roofs, and interiors by Joseph Dirand. Winston Churchill used to rent two cabanas, one to paint in and one “for naps” (and drinks, as during Prohibition spirits were served illegally here). Over the years, guests here have included Elizabeth Taylor, Wallis Simpson, and the Shah of Iran. It’s a reminder that Miami is vibrant, multicultural, and metropolitan, far from the beach. Rooms are comfortable, but it’s the public spaces that feel most welcoming-the fifth-floor pool deck that seems carved from the concrete pillars of the building with rattan ottomans and the wood-fired Quinto La Huella, an outpost of Uruguayan Parador La Huella. Highlights include floor-to-ceiling windows in every guest room and the cloud-skimming rooftop oasis Sugar, with its Asian-inspired bar surrounded by hand-carved teak stools. The hotel, opened by Hong Kong’s high-end Swire Hotels, has touches like a soaring lobby outfitted in dark woods and a metallic palette of gold, bronze, and silver. ![]() The elevator alone, with its infinity mirror, sets the posh, playful tone. This 352-room luxury hotel nestled in the heart of the $1 billion Brickell City Centre designed by Miami’s Arquitectonica is in the middle of downtown.
