I personally don’t think they could have done anything better.ĭo you have any advice for potential customers?īe very clear in communicating what you want and then let ArtClip be creative with it. It was beneficial for both of us to work together because they also had the opportunity to work with our extensive list of brides and grooms and it ended up being really cost-effective in terms of what they offered. We knew what we wanted and we just needed someone to execute it professionally ArtClip stood out from their competition because they didn’t try to force their way of doing things and did everything the way we wanted it to be done. They also did everything flawlessly - they created a video with really nice imagery for us and delivered exactly what we wanted. The ease of communication really impressed me. What did you find most impressive about them? He always responded immediately and it was really easy to communicate with him - when there was anything that needed to be edited out or changed, it was done impressively quickly with minimal back and forth. We mostly interfaced through email and all the communication was with Kos, who also did all the filming, editing, and technical work. Their project management and communication were great. How did ArtClip perform from a project management standpoint? The clients who I referred them to were very happy and said did a really good job, too. ArtClip was very skilled and, if anything, they were overqualified they could do a variety of different things in the video spectrum and production level because of their professional background. If we hadn’t chosen them and invested in their team, I don’t think someone else would have been able to capture what we wanted. We had an idea of what type of events we were going to film, how we were gonna approach them, and at what intervals, but they were the ones who picked specific key moments and they were really great at showing what our business was about. Their work was really good - they captured the moments very well and the technical work was flawless. What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? We may reach out to them in the future if we have another project. Our engagement lasted from January 2019–January 2020, though they worked on and off throughout. I thought their portfolio was great, so I wanted to reach out to them and we ended up meeting through a mutual connection. They also did wedding photography and videography, which is mainly how I judged them. I found their work and I noticed that they had a more professional production value than other event videographers. He had a small team, but he was our main point of contact. At my recommendation, a few of my clients have since hired them to cover weddings set at our venue, too. They also produced a short promotional video for the grand opening of our bistro, which is a casual dining location separate from our venue. There was a video for our home page and videos for each of the different types of events we offer. When the videos were complete, we put them on our website and designed it so the whole page showed the videos on repeat. They later combined the footage into various montages that depicted the variety of events we do. They shot scenes from multiple events, so the project took a long time - they had to come back to the venue at our preferred schedules and do the proper shoots for each event. ArtClip produced promotional videos for us.

From an operational standpoint, the presence/absence of higher life form organisms such as water bears does not warrant any operational changes. Some species of water bear are even known to be cannibalistic and prey on other water bears.įrom a practical standpoint, in wastewater processes, the presence of water bears typically indicates a higher sludge retention time and low ammonia concentrations (good nitrification), as ammonia is a recognized stressor. In wastewater, water bears may prey on bacteria, plant matter, algae, or may be carnivorous, preying on nematodes and rotifers. When conditions again become conductive to normal life functions, they simply reanimate and resume their life functions within a matter of hours.Īs a metazoan, water bears are higher up on the food chain in activated sludge processes, while bacteria are responsible for the majority of biological wastewater treatment. Water bears have a unique ability through a process called cryptobiosis to enter a “tun” state in which they can suspend their metabolism for up to 10 years or longer when exposed to stressful conditions. The skin of a water bear is transparent, and it is often possible to view the contents of what it has recently eaten.Ī scanning electron microscope image of a water bear.Ī normal lifespan of a water bear (uninterrupted by stressful conditions) is anywhere from 3 months to a little over 2 years. The mouth of a water bear has hard little stylets, which it uses to pierce its prey and suck the contents out. Water bears vary in size and are one of the larger critters we see under the microscope in activated sludge processes (typically at 200x magnification, the size of the water bear will be larger or fairly close to the size of the entire field of view). Water bears have eight legs with claws and a gait (head) that resembles a bear. Because of the resiliency of these organisms, it only seems appropriate they could also survive in activated sludge wastewater processes. They can also survive radiation, boiling liquids and even massive amounts of pressure of up to six times the pressure of the deepest part of the ocean. According to Smithsonian magazine, tardigrades can withstand environments as cold as minus 328 degrees F (minus 200 degrees C) or highs of more than 300 degrees F (148.9 degrees C). Water bears have been known to adapt to extreme temperatures and a wide range of environmental conditions including mountains, volcanoes, the Antarctic, and even have survived exposure in outer space. Tardigrades are famous for their extreme adaptability and may perhaps be nature’s most durable creature. The name tardigrade originated from a Spanish translation of “slow stepper.” There are approximately 1,300 known species of water bear within the phylum Tardigrada, which is believed to have originated over 500 million years ago. You may know tardigrades by another name, whether it’s water bear or even moss piglets (thanks to an episode of the South Park TV show). The terror of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre lies in each character being so unceremoniously dealt with - like they're just livestock at a slaughterhouse. It's the kind of body horror that shows how brutally easy it is to turn us all into lifeless meat sacks, rather than reveling in how much drawn-out mutilation a person can handle before expiring. A single crack to the skull of Pam's boyfriend, Kirk, sends the poor hunk into a silent seizure reminiscent of a floundering fish out of water. Leatherface got all dressed up for his dinner date :) Credit: Vortexĭespite the bombastic flashiness of Leatherface's iconic weapon, his most horrific kills are carried out with the quick and quiet precision of a club. In contrast, Texas Chainsaw Massacre keeps you trapped in a mundane, existential disgust over just how fragile the human body you're living in really is. In the modern age of gore horror, popularized by franchises like Saw, the fantastically over-the-top torture of a character scooping out their own eyeball has an almost disassociative effect, numbing the viewer with shock value. In essence, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reveals the stark difference between horror that prioritizes grossness over goriness. In one of Hooper's most famous quotes on horror (Opens in a new tab), the director insists, "You've got to send a physical sensation through and not let off the hook." And let us off the hook he does not! Hooper's Leatherface instead casually hangs us on a meat hook by our flesh, only to ignore our screams and meander off to deal with something more pressing. But The Texas Chainsaw Massacre grounds viewers in a body horror that's closer to home - and far more disturbing for it. Over-the-top torture porn certainly makes one squeamish. Much like the happy accident that forced Steven Spielberg to barely show the titular shark in Jaws (Opens in a new tab), 1974's Texas Chainsaw Massacre's PG-restrictiveness inadvertently revealed how less can be so much more when it comes to body horror. I don't know if we'll ever get another horror movie where you can so viscerally smell the blood, sweat, and decay wafting off the silver screen. Every subsequent reboot, like the 2003 series (and, in all likelihood, the upcoming 2022 remake) equally fails to capture the original's iconically understated grisliness. But that only resulted in movies with 100% more camp and about 15% of its predecessor's masterfully immersive rancidness. In fact, director Tobe Hooper purposefully shot his first feature film with a PG rating in mind (Opens in a new tab), only for an obviously shook MPAA to slap him with its most explicit label available at the time (later replaced by today's NC-17).Īfter the first film's unmitigated success, Hooper got a free license to amp up the bloodiness as many notches as he wanted in the sequels. Yet despite featuring literal cannibals hungry for innocent teen flesh, the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre was surprisingly devoid of any truly graphic gore. Receiving an X rating in America, it was flat-out banned from several countries, including the UK. Welcome to Thanks, I Love It, our series highlighting something onscreen we're obsessed with this week.Īt the risk of pissing off every gore-loving Saw franchise fanatic or Human Centipede devotee (if you sick freaks even exist), we need to state an undeniable truth: After all these decades, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre still reigns supreme as the ultimate masterclass in gross body horror.īack in 1974, the beloved slasher was unlike anything audiences had ever seen before.
